Barbados is a 430-square-kilometer Caribbean island of 280,000 people that punches above its weight culturally and diplomatically. GDP is about $6 billion. The country became a republic in 2021, removing Queen Elizabeth as head of state. It's the birthplace of Rihanna (now a national hero and ambassador) and rum — Mount Gay has been distilling since 1703, making it the world's oldest rum brand. Barbados has a 99% literacy rate, one of the highest in the developing world. The island is further east than any other Caribbean nation, sitting in the Atlantic rather than the Caribbean Sea proper.

Tourism drives about 40% of GDP, with the UK, US, and Canada as primary markets. The offshore financial sector has been significant but faces increasing international scrutiny. Sugar, once the entire economy, now accounts for less than 1% of GDP. Barbados restructured its debt in 2018 under PM Mia Mottley, who's become a global voice on climate finance for small island states.

Barbados has the third-oldest parliament in the Commonwealth — its House of Assembly has been meeting since 1639. The island also has more UNESCO-listed intangible cultural heritage items per capita than almost anywhere, including crop over festival traditions and landship movements.

Barbados is stable and well-governed by Caribbean standards, but climate vulnerability and tourism dependence are structural risks. Mottley's climate diplomacy has raised the country's global profile enormously.
