Belgium is a 11.6-million-person country that somehow functions as the de facto capital of Europe — Brussels hosts the EU, NATO, and over 1,000 international organizations. GDP is about $620 billion, making it the 24th-largest economy globally. The country is split between Dutch-speaking Flanders in the north and French-speaking Wallonia in the south, a linguistic divide so deep that it once went 541 days without a government. Belgium is the world's largest exporter of diamonds (Antwerp handles 80% of the world's rough diamonds) and chocolate. Population density is 383 per square kilometer, one of Europe's highest.

Chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and automotive assembly are the industrial heavyweights — Belgium exports about $470 billion worth of goods annually, making it one of the most trade-dependent economies in the world (exports equal roughly 80% of GDP). The Port of Antwerp-Bruges is Europe's second-largest port. Germany, France, and the Netherlands are the top trade partners. Public debt runs around 105% of GDP, and the tax burden is among the highest in the OECD.

Belgium has more varieties of beer than any country — over 1,500 distinct beers, and Belgian beer culture is UNESCO-recognized. The country also produces 220,000 tonnes of chocolate per year, and Brussels Airport is the world's largest chocolate selling point. Belgium's highway system is so well-lit that astronauts can trace its borders from space.

Belgium's role as Europe's institutional capital gives it outsized influence, but the internal linguistic divide and high debt are chronic drags. It works despite itself — the ultimate muddle-through economy.
