Chile is South America's most economically stable country — a 4,300-km-long strip of land between the Andes and the Pacific, home to 19.5 million people with a GDP of about $335 billion. It's the world's largest copper producer (28% of global output) and the second-largest lithium producer. Chile has the highest GDP per capita in South America and was the first South American country to join the OECD. The Atacama Desert is the driest place on earth and hosts the world's most powerful astronomical telescopes. Santiago is a modern, efficient capital that feels more like Southern Europe than Latin America.

Copper alone generates about 50% of export revenue — Codelco, the state copper company, is the world's largest copper producer. Lithium, salmon (Chile is the world's second-largest producer), wine, and fresh fruit round out the export mix. The country has free trade agreements with 65 countries, covering 88% of global GDP. Growth has moderated to 2-3% after the commodity supercycle, and inequality remains a persistent issue — the 2019 social protests were triggered by a subway fare hike but reflected deeper frustrations.

Chile's Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is the most remote inhabited island on earth — 3,700 km from the mainland. The country has the world's largest swimming pool at the San Alfonso del Mar resort — 1,013 meters long. Chile's Atacama Desert has been used by NASA as a Mars analog for testing rovers because the soil is so similar.

Chile's copper and lithium position it perfectly for the energy transition, but the social contract needs renegotiation. The constitutional reform process showed both the desire for change and the difficulty of achieving it.
