Bulgaria is the EU's poorest member state by GDP per capita, but that's changing fast. This Black Sea nation of 6.5 million has a $100 billion GDP and has been growing at 3-4% annually. Sofia has become a surprisingly competitive tech hub — IT outsourcing is booming, and the country produces more IT graduates per capita than Germany. Bulgaria has a flat 10% income tax and 10% corporate tax, the lowest in the EU. The country's Rose Valley produces about 85% of the world's rose oil, a key ingredient in high-end perfumes.

Manufacturing (machinery, electronics, food processing), IT services, and tourism are the main sectors. Germany, Romania, and Turkey are the top trade partners. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007 and has been trying to adopt the euro, with a target that keeps slipping. Remittances from the estimated 1 million Bulgarians working in Western Europe contribute about 3% of GDP. The country has one of Europe's fastest-shrinking populations — it's lost about 2 million people since 1990.

Bulgaria is the world's oldest gold-working civilization — the Varna Gold Treasure dates to 4,600 BC, predating Mesopotamian gold by 1,000 years. The country invented the Cyrillic alphabet (not Russia, as commonly believed) — Saints Cyril and Methodius' disciples developed it in Bulgaria. Bulgarian yogurt contains a unique bacteria strain, Lactobacillus bulgaricus, found nowhere else naturally.

Bulgaria's tech sector and low taxes are genuine draws, but the demographic collapse is alarming. If the population keeps shrinking at this rate, economic gains won't matter — there won't be enough people to sustain them.
