๐Ÿ“‹ About Cyprus

Cyprus is a Mediterranean island of 1.2 million people divided since 1974 โ€” the Republic of Cyprus (Greek Cypriot south) controls about 60% of the island, while the Turkish-occupied north is recognized only by Turkey. GDP is about $30 billion. The country joined the EU in 2004 and the eurozone in 2008, then nearly went bankrupt in 2013 when its oversized banking sector collapsed. Cyprus has reinvented itself as a tech and services hub, with a 12.5% corporate tax rate attracting international companies. The island has been inhabited for over 10,000 years and has some of the oldest water wells in the world.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Economy

Services dominate โ€” financial services, shipping (Cyprus has the EU's third-largest merchant fleet by tonnage), and professional services contribute about 80% of GDP. Tourism brings in about $3 billion annually. The discovery of offshore natural gas (Aphrodite field, estimated 4.5 trillion cubic feet) could be transformative but development has been slow due to Turkish objections. The "golden passport" citizenship-by-investment program was scrapped in 2020 after corruption scandals.

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

Cyprus is the mythological birthplace of Aphrodite, goddess of love โ€” Petra tou Romiou beach is the supposed spot. The island has the oldest known perfumes in the world, discovered at Pyrgos dating to 2000 BC. Cyprus is the only EU country where driving is on the left, a legacy of British colonial rule.

๐Ÿ“ Outlook

Cyprus has recovered well from the 2013 crisis, but the division of the island remains an unresolved drag on potential. The gas reserves could be a game-changer if regional politics allow development.
