The Faroe Islands is a self-governing territory of Denmark — 18 islands in the North Atlantic between Iceland and Norway, home to 54,000 people with a GDP of about $3.5 billion. The islands are dramatically beautiful: sheer cliffs, grass-roofed houses, and more sheep than people (about 80,000 sheep). The Faroes have one of the highest GDPs per capita in the world, driven almost entirely by fishing — particularly salmon farming, which has boomed. The territory is not part of the EU (despite Denmark being a member) specifically to maintain control over its fishing waters. The annual grindadráp (pilot whale hunt) draws international controversy.
Fish and fish products account for about 95% of exports — salmon, cod, mackerel, and herring. The Faroese salmon farming industry has grown enormously, with companies like Bakkafrost becoming globally significant. Denmark provides a block grant, but the Faroes are increasingly financially self-sufficient. Tourism has grown rapidly — visitor numbers have tripled in a decade, though the islands have implemented a "closed for maintenance" tourism management approach. The Faroese króna is pegged to the Danish krone.

The Faroe Islands has a tunnel system connecting the islands that includes an underwater roundabout — the only one in the world. The territory's Múlafossur waterfall, which drops directly into the ocean from a cliff, is one of the most photographed waterfalls in the world. The Faroes have their own football league, and the national team famously beat Greece (the reigning European champions) 1-0 in 2014.
The Faroes have turned fish into prosperity — the salmon farming boom has created genuine wealth. The challenge is diversification and managing the environmental impact of aquaculture. Independence from Denmark is discussed but the economic case isn't quite there yet.
