Finland is a Nordic nation of 5.5 million that consistently tops global rankings for education, happiness, press freedom, and governance. GDP is about $300 billion. The country shares an 1,340-km border with Russia — the longest EU-Russia border — which drove its historic decision to join NATO in 2023 after decades of neutrality. Finland has more saunas than cars (3.3 million saunas for 5.5 million people). Nokia, once the world's dominant mobile phone maker, is still a major telecom infrastructure company. The country is 73% forest, the highest proportion in Europe, and has 188,000 lakes.

Technology, forestry, metals, and engineering drive exports. Key companies include Nokia, Kone (elevators), Wärtsilä (marine engines), and UPM (paper/biofuels). Sweden, Germany, and the US are the top trade partners. Finland's education system — no standardized testing until age 16, teachers required to have master's degrees — is studied worldwide. The economy has been sluggish compared to other Nordics, growing at just 1-2% in recent years, partly due to the loss of Russian trade.

Finland has the world's highest coffee consumption per capita — about 12 kg per person per year, nearly double Italy's. The country didn't have its own language in written form until the 16th century — Swedish was the administrative language. Finland's "everyman's right" (jokamiehenoikeus) allows anyone to forage, camp, and hike on any land, public or private.

Finland's NATO membership marks a historic strategic shift, and the country's innovation ecosystem remains world-class. The Russia border risk is now managed through alliance, but the economic growth challenge persists.
