Romania is an EU member of 19 million with a $310 billion GDP that's been one of Europe's fastest-growing economies — GDP has roughly tripled since EU accession in 2007. The country has a booming IT sector (Bucharest and Cluj-Napoca are major tech hubs), significant agricultural potential (some of Europe's most fertile land), and untapped Black Sea gas reserves. Transylvania's medieval towns, painted monasteries, and Carpathian Mountains draw increasing tourism. Romania has the EU's largest Roma population (estimated 1.5-2.5 million) and one of its most complex ethnic landscapes. The country's revolution in 1989 was the only violent overthrow of a communist regime in Eastern Europe.

Automotive (Dacia/Renault and Ford have major plants), IT services, agriculture, and energy are the main sectors. Germany, Italy, and France are the top trade partners. Romania's IT sector employs over 200,000 people and generates about $8 billion in revenue. The country has significant oil and gas production — OMV Petrom is the largest oil company in Southeastern Europe. GDP growth has been strong at 4-5%, though inflation and fiscal deficits have been concerns. Romania aims to adopt the euro but the timeline keeps slipping.

Romania's Palace of the Parliament in Bucharest is the world's heaviest building and the second-largest administrative building after the Pentagon — Ceaușescu demolished a fifth of Bucharest's historic center to build it. The country's Danube Delta is Europe's largest wetland and a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve with over 300 bird species. Bram Stoker never visited Romania — he based Dracula's castle on descriptions and maps, and the real Bran Castle has only a loose connection to Vlad the Impaler.

Romania's growth trajectory and IT sector are impressive, but corruption and institutional weakness remain drags. The Black Sea gas development could boost energy security for both Romania and the EU. The country is punching below its potential.
