Greece is a Mediterranean nation of 10.4 million with a $240 billion GDP that's still recovering from the worst economic crisis in modern European history. Between 2009 and 2018, GDP contracted by 25% — a depression deeper than the US Great Depression. The country has over 6,000 islands (227 inhabited) and the longest coastline in the Mediterranean. Tourism is massive — over 30 million visitors annually for a country of 10 million. Greece has the world's largest merchant shipping fleet, controlling about 20% of global shipping capacity. Athens is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, with 3,400 years of recorded history.

Tourism (about 20% of GDP), shipping, agriculture (olive oil — Greece is the third-largest producer — and feta cheese), and pharmaceuticals are the main sectors. Germany, Italy, and Turkey are the top trade partners. Greece's public debt is still about 160% of GDP, the highest in the eurozone, though debt servicing costs are manageable due to favorable terms from EU bailout loans. The economy has been growing at 2-3% post-pandemic, and unemployment has fallen from a peak of 28% to about 11%.

Greece has more archaeological museums than any other country in the world. The country's Santorini caldera was formed by one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history (around 1600 BC), which may have inspired the Atlantis legend. Greek shipping magnates control a fleet worth over $120 billion — the families (Onassis, Niarchos, Angelicoussis) are essentially a maritime aristocracy.

Greece is finally emerging from its lost decade, but the scars are deep — a generation of young Greeks emigrated, and the brain drain hasn't reversed. Tourism and shipping provide stability, but the economy needs more productive sectors to truly recover.
