🇬🇱 Greenland

Greenland is the world's largest island — 2.16 million square kilometers, but with only 56,000 people, making it the least densely populated territory on earth. It's an autonomous territory of Denmark with its own parliament and increasing self-governance. About 80% of the island is covered by an ice sheet up to 3 km thick — the second-largest ice body in the world after Antarctica. Greenland has become a geopolitical hotspot due to its Arctic location, mineral resources, and strategic military importance — the US has a Space Force base at Thule (Pituffik). The ice sheet is melting at an accelerating rate, which is catastrophic for global sea levels but is also revealing mineral deposits and opening new shipping routes.

Fishing (primarily shrimp and halibut) accounts for about 90% of exports. Denmark provides an annual block grant of about $600 million — roughly half of government revenue. Tourism is growing, driven by Arctic adventure travel and Northern Lights viewing. Greenland has significant deposits of rare earth elements, uranium, rubies, and other minerals, but environmental concerns and harsh conditions have limited development. The territory uses the Danish krone.

Greenland's ice sheet contains enough water to raise global sea levels by 7.4 meters if it melted completely. The island's Ilulissat Icefjord produces about 20 billion tonnes of ice annually — icebergs calving here are among the largest in the Northern Hemisphere. The iceberg that sank the Titanic likely originated from Greenland's glaciers. Greenland's Norse settlements, established by Erik the Red around 985 AD, mysteriously disappeared in the 15th century.

Greenland's strategic importance is rising as the Arctic opens up. Independence from Denmark is a long-term aspiration, but economic self-sufficiency requires developing mineral resources or finding alternative revenue. Climate change is simultaneously Greenland's greatest threat and its greatest economic opportunity.
