Honduras is a Central American country of 10.4 million with a GDP of about $31 billion. It has one of the highest murder rates in the world outside of active war zones, though the rate has declined significantly from its 2011 peak. The Bay Islands (RoatΓ‘n, Utila, Guanaja) are a major dive tourism destination sitting on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Coffee is the main export crop β Honduras is Central America's largest coffee producer. The CopΓ‘n ruins are one of the most important Maya archaeological sites, known for their elaborate stone carvings. The country's name comes from Columbus, who reportedly said "gracias a Dios que hemos salido de estas honduras" (thank God we've left these depths) after navigating treacherous waters.
Remittances from the US ($8+ billion annually) are the largest source of foreign exchange, exceeding all exports. Coffee, bananas, palm oil, and shrimp are the main agricultural exports. The maquila (assembly) sector produces textiles for US brands. The US is the dominant trade partner by far. GDP growth has been around 3-4%, but about 60% of the population lives in poverty. The country established a special economic zone (ZEDE) experiment that attracted international attention before being repealed.

Honduras's Mosquito Coast (La Mosquitia) contains the largest intact rainforest in Central America and the recently discovered "Lost City of the Monkey God" β a pre-Columbian city found using LiDAR technology in 2015. The country's Lago de Yojoa is the largest natural lake in Honduras and a birding hotspot with over 480 species recorded. Honduras has the world's largest underwater sinkhole β the Great Blue Hole of Guanaja.
Honduras is caught between remittance dependency and security challenges. The natural assets β reefs, ruins, rainforest β could support a much larger tourism economy if safety improves.
