Hungary is a Central European nation of 9.6 million with a $200 billion GDP that's become the EU's most politically controversial member under Viktor Orbán, who's been in power since 2010. Budapest is one of Europe's most beautiful capitals, straddling the Danube with its thermal baths, Art Nouveau architecture, and ruin bars. The country is a major automotive manufacturing hub — Audi, Mercedes, BMW, and Suzuki all have plants here. Hungary has the world's largest thermal water cave system and more thermal springs than any country except Iceland and Japan. The Hungarian language (Magyar) is unrelated to any neighboring language — it's a Uralic language closer to Finnish and Estonian.

Automotive manufacturing, electronics, and pharmaceuticals drive exports worth about $140 billion annually. Germany is by far the largest trade partner. Hungary has attracted massive Chinese investment — CATL and BYD are building major EV battery plants, making Hungary Europe's largest battery production hub. The forint has been one of Europe's weakest currencies, and inflation spiked above 25% in 2023. EU funds (about 4-5% of GDP) have been partially frozen over rule-of-law concerns.

Hungary has won more Olympic gold medals per capita than any other country — 181 golds for a population under 10 million, with water polo and fencing as particular strengths. Budapest's Parliament building is the third-largest in the world and took 17 years to build. The Rubik's Cube was invented by Hungarian architect Ernő Rubik in 1974 — over 450 million have been sold.

Hungary's EV battery bet could pay off enormously, but the political isolation within the EU and frozen funds are real costs. Orbán's balancing act between East and West is getting harder to sustain.
