Iceland is a volcanic island of 380,000 people with a $28 billion GDP — the smallest country by population to have its own currency, stock exchange, and airline. The country sits on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, giving it extraordinary geothermal energy — nearly 100% of electricity and heating comes from renewable sources (geothermal and hydro). Iceland's 2008 banking collapse was spectacular: the three major banks defaulted on $62 billion in debt, roughly 10 times GDP. The recovery was equally remarkable — Iceland jailed bankers, let the banks fail, and bounced back faster than most crisis-hit countries. Tourism has exploded, with over 2 million visitors annually (5x the population).

Tourism (about 40% of export revenue), fishing (particularly cod and haddock), and aluminum smelting (using cheap geothermal energy) are the three pillars. The country exports more fish per capita than any nation. Data centers are a growing sector, attracted by cheap renewable energy and cool climate. The króna is volatile, and the small economy is vulnerable to external shocks. Iceland has one of the highest GDP per capita figures in the world at about $75,000.

Iceland has no army, navy, or air force — it's defended by NATO (primarily the US). The country has more books published per capita than any other nation. Iceland's naming convention still uses patronymics — there are no family surnames, and the phone book is organized by first name. The Icelandic language has changed so little that modern Icelanders can read 800-year-old sagas.

Iceland's renewable energy abundance is a genuine strategic asset in a decarbonizing world. The tourism boom needs managing to avoid overtourism, but the fundamentals are strong for such a tiny economy.
