Ireland is a $530 billion GDP economy of just 5.1 million people — on paper, one of the richest countries in the world per capita, though the headline GDP figure is inflated by multinational profit-shifting (the "leprechaun economics" phenomenon). The real economy is still impressive: Ireland has transformed from one of Europe's poorest countries in the 1980s to a tech and pharma hub hosting the European headquarters of Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Pfizer. The 12.5% corporate tax rate (now 15% for large multinationals under the OECD deal) was the magnet. Dublin has become one of Europe's most expensive cities, with a severe housing crisis. The country's cultural exports — literature, music, whiskey — punch far above its weight.

Pharmaceuticals and medical devices account for over 50% of goods exports — Ireland is the world's largest exporter of contact lenses and a top-five pharma exporter. Tech services (particularly from US multinationals) are the other pillar. The US and UK are the top trade partners. Modified GNI (a better measure of the real economy) is about 40% lower than GDP. The housing crisis is acute — rents in Dublin rival London, and homelessness has hit record levels. Corporate tax receipts are volatile and concentrated — the top 10 companies pay about 50% of all corporate tax.

Ireland's population is still below its pre-famine level — 8.2 million in 1841 versus 5.1 million today. The Great Famine (1845-52) killed about 1 million and drove 1 million to emigrate, and emigration continued for over a century. The Irish diaspora numbers about 70 million worldwide — 14 times the island's population. Ireland is the only country in the world where wind energy generates more electricity than any other source.

Ireland's multinational-dependent model has delivered extraordinary prosperity, but the concentration risk is real — a few corporate decisions in Silicon Valley could reshape the Irish economy overnight. The housing crisis is the most pressing domestic issue.
