🇯🇲 Jamaica

Jamaica is a Caribbean island of 2.8 million with a GDP of about $17 billion and a cultural footprint that dwarfs its size. Reggae, Bob Marley, Usain Bolt, Blue Mountain coffee, jerk chicken — Jamaica's brand recognition is extraordinary for a country smaller than Connecticut. Tourism is the economic engine, with over 4 million visitors annually. The country has struggled with high crime rates — Kingston has one of the highest murder rates of any capital city. Jamaica's debt burden was crushing (over 140% of GDP in 2013) but has been reduced to about 80% through disciplined fiscal management.

Tourism and remittances (about $3.5 billion combined) are the main foreign exchange earners. Bauxite/alumina was historically important but has declined. Blue Mountain coffee commands premium prices — up to $100 per pound — but production is small. The BPO (business process outsourcing) sector has grown rapidly, employing over 40,000 people. The US is the dominant trade partner and source of tourists. GDP growth has been modest at 1-2%, constrained by high energy costs (Jamaica imports nearly all its fuel).

Jamaica has produced more world-class sprinters per capita than any country — the island has won 78 Olympic medals, almost all in track and field, for a population of 2.8 million. The country's Blue Lagoon in Port Antonio is where the 1980 film was shot, and the water changes color throughout the day. Jamaica was the first Caribbean country to gain independence (1962) and the first tropical country to compete in the Winter Olympics (the bobsled team, immortalized in "Cool Runnings").

Jamaica's cultural brand is priceless but undermonetized. The debt reduction is a genuine achievement, and the BPO sector shows diversification is possible. Energy costs remain the biggest structural drag.
