๐Ÿ“‹ About Kosovo

Kosovo is Europe's youngest country โ€” a partially recognized state of 1.8 million that declared independence from Serbia in 2008. About 115 UN members recognize it, but Serbia, Russia, China, and five EU members do not. GDP is about $10 billion. The country is 93% ethnic Albanian and has a very young population (median age 30). Kosovo's economy is heavily dependent on remittances from the large diaspora (about 800,000 Kosovars live abroad, mainly in Germany and Switzerland). Pristina is a youthful, energetic capital with a growing cafรฉ culture. The country hosts a NATO peacekeeping force (KFOR) that's been present since 1999.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Economy

Remittances (about 18% of GDP), services, construction, and mining (lignite, lead, zinc) are the main economic drivers. Germany, Italy, and Albania are the top trade partners. Unemployment is high at about 25%, and youth unemployment exceeds 45%. The country uses the euro unilaterally (it's not in the eurozone). Kosovo has significant lignite reserves โ€” the fifth-largest in the world โ€” but they're a liability in a decarbonizing world. The informal economy is estimated at 30-40% of GDP.

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

Kosovo's Newborn monument in Pristina โ€” a large typographic sculpture โ€” is repainted every year on the anniversary of independence with different designs reflecting the country's aspirations. The medieval Serbian Orthodox monasteries in Kosovo (Deฤani, Graฤanica) are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and a source of ongoing cultural tension. Kosovo has one of the youngest populations in Europe.

๐Ÿ“ Outlook

Kosovo's partial recognition limits its international integration โ€” it can't join the UN, and the Serbia normalization process is stalled. The young population is an asset, but without more economic opportunities, emigration will continue to drain talent.
