Moldova is Europe's poorest country by GDP per capita — a landlocked nation of 2.6 million (down from 4.3 million at independence) with a GDP of about $16 billion. The country is squeezed between Romania and Ukraine, and the breakaway region of Transnistria (backed by Russian troops) controls about 12% of the territory. Moldova has been on an accelerated EU accession path since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Wine is the national obsession — the Mileștii Mici wine cellar holds the Guinness record for the world's largest wine collection at over 2 million bottles, stored in 200 km of underground tunnels. About a third of the working-age population has emigrated.

Agriculture (wine, fruits, vegetables, tobacco), textiles, and remittances (about 15% of GDP) are the main economic drivers. Romania and Russia are the top trade partners, though the country is pivoting toward the EU. The Transnistria issue complicates everything — the region hosts a massive Soviet-era arms depot and a steel plant that's the largest industrial enterprise. Energy dependency on Russian gas (supplied through Transnistria) has been a major vulnerability.

Moldova's wine cellars at Cricova are a literal underground city — 120 km of tunnels where you can drive a car between wine storage galleries. The country has one of the highest rates of alcohol consumption in the world. Moldova's national dish, mămăligă (cornmeal porridge), is essentially the same as Romanian polenta and reflects the deep cultural ties between the two countries.

Moldova's EU path is the most consequential decision in its history, but Transnistria and Russian influence remain obstacles. The demographic collapse is the quiet crisis — the country is emptying out faster than almost anywhere in Europe.
