๐Ÿ“‹ About Nicaragua

Nicaragua is Central America's largest country by area but one of its poorest โ€” 7 million people with a GDP of about $17 billion. President Daniel Ortega, a former Sandinista revolutionary, has consolidated authoritarian control since 2007, jailing opposition candidates and shutting down NGOs and media outlets. The country has two coastlines (Pacific and Caribbean), active volcanoes, and Lake Nicaragua โ€” Central America's largest lake, home to the world's only freshwater sharks. A proposed interoceanic canal (to rival Panama's) was announced with Chinese backing in 2013 but has gone nowhere. Nicaragua is the second-poorest country in the Western Hemisphere after Haiti.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Economy

Agriculture (coffee, beef, gold, sugar, tobacco), textiles (free trade zone assembly), and remittances are the main economic drivers. The US remains the largest trade partner despite political tensions. Gold mining has grown significantly, making it the top export. The economy has been surprisingly resilient despite sanctions and political isolation, growing at about 4%. The cรณrdoba has been relatively stable. The free trade zones employ about 120,000 workers, mostly in garment assembly.

๐Ÿ’ก Did You Know?

Nicaragua's Masaya Volcano has a continuously active lava lake โ€” one of only a handful in the world โ€” and Spanish conquistadors called it the "Mouth of Hell." The country's Corn Islands in the Caribbean are a budget alternative to more expensive Caribbean destinations, with English-speaking Creole communities. Leรณn's cathedral is the largest in Central America and a UNESCO site.

๐Ÿ“ Outlook

Nicaragua's political trajectory is deeply concerning โ€” the democratic space has essentially closed. The economy functions but the authoritarian model limits investment and innovation. The canal dream is dead.
