Panama is defined by its canal — the 82-km waterway handles about 5% of global maritime trade and generates over $3 billion annually in tolls. This Central American country of 4.4 million has a GDP of about $77 billion and the highest per capita income in Central America. Panama City's skyline looks more like Miami than Central America, with a major international banking center (over 80 banks). The country uses the US dollar (called the balboa locally), providing monetary stability. The Colón Free Trade Zone is the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Panama's biodiversity is extraordinary — it has more bird species than the US and Canada combined.

The canal, banking, logistics (including the Colón Free Trade Zone), and real estate drive the economy. The canal expansion completed in 2016 allows larger "New Panamax" ships to transit. Copper mining (the Cobre Panamá mine was one of the world's largest before being shut down by court order in 2023 after massive protests) was briefly a major export. Tourism contributes about $5 billion. GDP growth has been strong at 5-7% in recent years. The country's favorable tax regime has attracted both legitimate business and controversy — the "Panama Papers" leak in 2016 exposed massive offshore tax evasion.

Panama is the only place in the world where you can watch the sun rise over the Pacific and set over the Atlantic — the isthmus runs east-west, not north-south as most people assume. The country's Darién Gap is the only break in the Pan-American Highway — a 100-km stretch of roadless jungle between Panama and Colombia that's become a dangerous migration route. Panama hats are actually from Ecuador, not Panama.

Panama's canal gives it a permanent economic moat, but the Cobre Panamá shutdown showed that resource extraction faces growing public resistance. The banking sector's reputation needs rehabilitation post-Panama Papers.
