Portugal is a Western European nation of 10.3 million with a $280 billion GDP that's reinvented itself as a tech and startup hub. Lisbon has attracted a wave of digital nomads, remote workers, and tech companies — Web Summit, the world's largest tech conference, relocated here from Dublin. The country nearly went bankrupt during the eurozone crisis (2011-14 bailout) but has recovered strongly. Portugal generates over 60% of its electricity from renewables and has run entirely on renewable power for stretches of several days. The Algarve coast is one of Europe's most popular retirement and tourism destinations. Portugal's colonial history created a global Lusophone world spanning Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, and beyond.

Tourism (about 15% of GDP), automotive (Volkswagen's Autoeuropa plant), textiles, cork (Portugal produces about 50% of the world's cork), and tech services are the main sectors. Spain, France, and Germany are the top trade partners. The Golden Visa program attracted billions in real estate investment before being restricted in 2023. GDP growth has been around 2-3%. The country has a significant lithium deposit — Europe's largest — that could supply the EV battery industry, though mining plans face environmental opposition.

Portugal decriminalized all drugs in 2001 — not legalized, but decriminalized — and the results have been widely studied: drug-related deaths dropped, HIV infections among drug users fell by 95%, and overall drug use didn't increase. The country's Pastéis de Belém bakery in Lisbon has been making the same custard tart recipe since 1837 — only three people know the secret recipe at any time. Portugal had the longest-lasting colonial empire in European history, spanning from 1415 to 1999 (Macau).

Portugal's tech pivot and quality-of-life appeal have created a genuine renaissance. The lithium reserves add strategic value. The risk is that success drives up costs and prices out the locals who made Lisbon attractive in the first place.
