Saint Lucia is a volcanic Caribbean island of 180,000 people with a GDP of about $2.2 billion. The Pitons — twin volcanic peaks rising dramatically from the sea — are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most iconic images in the Caribbean. The country has produced two Nobel laureates (economist Arthur Lewis and poet Derek Walcott) for a population smaller than most small cities — the highest per capita Nobel rate in the world. Tourism is the dominant industry, with the island positioning itself as a luxury honeymoon destination. Saint Lucia is the only country in the world named after a woman (Saint Lucy of Syracuse).

Tourism accounts for about 65% of GDP and employment. Banana exports, once the economic backbone, have declined sharply due to the loss of preferential EU market access. The CBI program provides additional revenue. The country is vulnerable to hurricanes and has limited economic diversification. The UK, US, and other Caribbean nations are the main trade partners.

Saint Lucia's Sulphur Springs near Soufrière is billed as the world's only "drive-in volcano" — you can drive right up to bubbling mud pools and fumaroles. The island switches between French and British control 14 times — more than any other Caribbean island. Saint Lucia's jazz festival draws performers and audiences from around the world, punching well above the island's weight culturally.

Saint Lucia's natural beauty and Nobel Prize pedigree give it a distinctive brand, but the economy is too tourism-dependent for comfort. Climate resilience and diversification are the priorities.
