San Marino claims to be the world's oldest republic, founded in 301 AD — a 61-square-kilometer microstate of 34,000 people entirely surrounded by Italy. GDP is about $1.8 billion. The country sits atop Mount Titano in the Apennines and has three iconic medieval towers on its peaks. San Marino is not an EU member but uses the euro and has a customs union with Italy. The country has more vehicles than people — about 1.6 cars per resident, one of the highest ratios in the world. Tourism (about 2 million day-trippers annually from nearby Italian beach resorts) is a major revenue source.

Manufacturing (electronics, ceramics, clothing), banking, tourism, and the sale of postage stamps and coins to collectors are the main economic activities. Italy is essentially the only trade partner. The banking sector was once significant but has shrunk under international pressure on tax havens. The country has no national debt. San Marino's GDP per capita is about $52,000, comparable to Western European averages.

San Marino has the world's oldest constitution still in effect — the Statutes of 1600, though the republic's founding documents date to 301 AD. The country is governed by two Captains Regent who serve six-month terms — the shortest head-of-state tenure in the world. San Marino's football team is famously one of the worst in the world — they've won only one competitive match in their history (against Liechtenstein in 2004).

San Marino's survival for 1,700+ years is remarkable, but the economic model is essentially being a charming hilltop town that happens to be a country. It works, and there's no reason it won't continue working.
