Slovenia is a small Alpine country of 2.1 million with a GDP of about $65 billion โ the wealthiest of the former Yugoslav republics by far. The country has extraordinary geographic diversity for its size: Alps, Mediterranean coast, karst caves, and Pannonian plains all within 20,000 square kilometers. Ljubljana is one of Europe's most charming small capitals, with a car-free center and a castle overlooking the old town. Slovenia was the first former communist country to hold the EU presidency (2008). The country has a strong cooperative and social democratic tradition โ inequality is among the lowest in the EU.
Pharmaceuticals (Krka and Lek/Novartis), automotive parts, machinery, and tourism are the main sectors. Germany, Italy, and Austria are the top trade partners.
