Suriname is South America's smallest country — 620,000 people in 164,000 square kilometers, making it one of the most sparsely populated countries on earth. GDP is about $3.6 billion. The country is extraordinarily diverse: Hindustani, Creole, Javanese, Maroon, Indigenous, and Chinese communities coexist, and Dutch is the official language (the only Dutch-speaking country in South America). About 93% of the country is tropical rainforest. Offshore oil discoveries by TotalEnergies and APA Corporation could transform the economy — the finds are in the same geological formation as Guyana's massive reserves. Paramaribo's historic inner city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Gold mining (about 70% of exports), oil, bauxite/alumina, and agriculture (rice, bananas) are the main sectors. The Netherlands, Switzerland (gold refining), and the UAE are the top trade partners. The country defaulted on its debt in 2020 and is under an IMF program. The Surinamese dollar has been devalued multiple times. If the offshore oil discoveries prove commercial, Suriname could follow Guyana's trajectory — but development is still years away.

Suriname's Central Suriname Nature Reserve covers 1.6 million hectares of pristine tropical forest — it's one of the largest protected areas of tropical rainforest in the world. The country's Maroon communities, descendants of escaped enslaved Africans, maintain West African cultural traditions that have been preserved for over 300 years. Suriname is one of the most forested countries on earth, with about 93% forest cover.

Suriname's offshore oil potential could be transformative, but the country needs to learn from both Guyana's opportunities and other petro-states' mistakes. The forest cover is a carbon credit goldmine that's barely been explored.
