Trinidad and Tobago is the Caribbean's wealthiest country per capita — a twin-island nation of 1.4 million with a GDP of about $28 billion, built on oil and natural gas. The country is the world's largest exporter of ammonia and methanol, and the birthplace of steel pan music, calypso, and soca. Trinidad's Carnival is one of the world's great festivals, rivaling Rio's. Tobago is the quieter, more tourist-oriented island. The country has the most diverse ethnic mix in the Caribbean — roughly 35% Indian, 34% African, and 23% mixed, a legacy of indentured labor from India after slavery's abolition. Pitch Lake in Trinidad is the world's largest natural deposit of asphalt.

Energy (oil, natural gas, petrochemicals) accounts for about 40% of GDP and 80% of exports. The US is the largest trade partner. Gas production has been declining, creating fiscal pressure. The country has been trying to diversify into financial services, manufacturing, and tourism, with mixed results. The TT dollar has been relatively stable but is considered overvalued. GDP growth has been sluggish at 1-2% as the energy sector matures.

Trinidad's Pitch Lake covers about 40 hectares and is 75 meters deep — it's been supplying asphalt for roads worldwide since the 1800s, including paving Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington DC. The country's Carnival generates about $100 million in economic activity annually. Trinidad and Tobago has the highest caloric intake per capita in the Caribbean and one of the highest obesity rates in the Americas.

Trinidad's energy wealth has provided prosperity but also complacency. Gas production decline is the defining challenge — without new discoveries or successful diversification, the fiscal model is unsustainable.
