Uruguay is South America's quiet overachiever — a country of 3.4 million with a $72 billion GDP that consistently ranks as the continent's most democratic, least corrupt, and most socially progressive nation. It was the first country in the world to fully legalize recreational marijuana (2013) and has some of the most progressive LGBTQ+ rights in the Americas. Uruguay generates over 95% of its electricity from renewables (mostly wind and hydro), one of the highest rates in the world. The country has more cattle than people — about 12 million cows to 3.4 million humans. Montevideo regularly ranks as the city with the highest quality of life in South America.

Beef, soybeans, rice, dairy, and wood products are the main exports. Brazil, China, and the EU are the top trade partners. The country has a well-developed services sector, particularly financial services and IT. Uruguay has a free trade zone system that attracts regional headquarters. GDP growth has been modest at 2-3%. The peso has been relatively stable. The country's small size limits economies of scale, and it's squeezed between two much larger neighbors (Brazil and Argentina) whose economic crises regularly spill over.

Uruguay won the first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1930 (hosted in Montevideo) and has won it twice — remarkable for a country of 3.4 million. The country's former president José Mujica (2010-2015) was called the "world's poorest president" — he donated 90% of his salary and drove a 1987 Volkswagen Beetle. Uruguay has no official religion and Christmas is officially called "Family Day."

Uruguay is proof that a small country can do things right — renewable energy, democratic governance, social progress. The challenge is economic dynamism: stability is great, but growth has been too slow to close the gap with developed nations.
