Vatican City is the world's smallest country — 0.44 square kilometers with about 800 residents and a "GDP" that's essentially unmeasurable in conventional terms. It's the spiritual center of 1.3 billion Catholics worldwide and the seat of the Pope. St. Peter's Basilica is the world's largest church, and the Sistine Chapel ceiling (painted by Michelangelo) is one of the most famous artworks in human history. The Vatican Museums receive about 7 million visitors annually. The Vatican Bank (IOR) manages about $5 billion in assets. The country has its own postal service, radio station, and even a small railway station, but no permanent residential population in the traditional sense — most "residents" are clergy.

Revenue comes from museum admissions (about €100 million annually), donations from Catholic dioceses worldwide (Peter's Pence), stamp and coin sales, and investments. The Vatican Bank has been reformed after decades of financial scandals. The Holy See's annual budget is about $350 million. The Vatican has no taxes, no GDP in the conventional sense, and no commercial economy. It uses the euro through an agreement with Italy.

The Vatican's Secret Archives contain over 85 km of shelving with documents spanning 12 centuries — they were renamed the "Vatican Apostolic Archive" in 2019 because "secret" just means "private" in Latin, but the old name stuck. The country has the highest crime rate per capita in the world — mostly pickpocketing of tourists — because the tiny population inflates the per-capita statistics. Vatican City has its own top-level internet domain (.va) and its own amateur football team.

Vatican City isn't a country in any economic sense — it's a spiritual headquarters that happens to have sovereignty. Its influence is measured in souls, not GDP. Pope Francis's reforms have modernized the institution, but the challenges of a 2,000-year-old organization are unique.
